Tawan Prateebrat

About Us:

Hannah:

Hello, my name is Hannah Paek I go to school at Alvarado Intermediate School and I'm 13 years old. Three years younger than my older sister Eunice in Rowland high school. My college goal would be going to the University of California Irvine and go to medical school to become an assistant physician.

My impression about the project was not the best at first I thought it was boring and not that interesting. But after a while it got more interesting I learned about Thailand a country I never studied before like about the farmers revolt, the Thailand university massacre. This project has also help me utilize social skills that I don't use a lot because I had to work with a partner. We had to talk about scheduling, or interviewing, writing. We had to utilize partner work to finish on time and making sure to make the work as best as possible. One personal lesson I learned is that sometimes it's better to move illegal if it's a really bad situation even though it would take a lot of perseverance to get there. This project helps me answer the essential question of how has immigration shaped America by showing me the types of people who left some people's perspective. Showing me the types of people who left and what places they left help me understand why there were so many different cultures and some people's mindsets.

Life in Thailand:

In 1976 Tawan Prateebrat was born in a family with 3 siblings, 1 brother and 2 girls a mother and father during the time of the farmers revolt. Born in the bottom region of Thailand his father and mother worked in a rice farm. Soon after another addition was added to the family a little girl. He continued his schooling all the way up to high school. Tawan had a dream of becoming an artist, but he gave up on that dream because he couldn't draw. Instead, he worked as a salesman selling soil to farmers. In 1994 Tawan meet his wife Keson for the first time in the mall. In 2004 his wife had given birth to a baby boy naming him Neo. Until within a year. he was offered a job as a farmer in the US by a farming company to help his family financially.

Immigration journey:

After he had a passport he bought an airplane ticket Tawan come to the US for the reason of the difference in money paid in here it is 70% higher than Thailand money, when coming he had a lot of help from the people coming along the way there were good and bad to it. When we ask him about his feeling about his immigration journey he said "I miss my home I was sad but I got used to it" we also ask him about how he about feels here," Tawan said ¨I lonely that he didn't know anyone it would take a long time."

Life in the US:

Tawan Prateebrat finally made it to the US after 16 hours on a plane from Thailand in 2005. Landing in Washington he started to work under a farming company without a green card working as a farmer "A farming company hired me and the 100 others to work for them so we work for a long time then there was no job because of that we get to stay longer." After three years working as a Tawan Prateebrat quit his job and went back to college at Mt. Sac community college to finish his schooling. During college, Tawan got his green card to work. After getting a green card he decided to work in a Thailand restaurant. In 2009 his son Neo Prateebrat and Keson came to the US. But after 3 weeks Keson left to go back to Thailand leaving only Neo and Tawan. In 2014 Tawan went back to Thailand to attend his mother's funeral. Tawan went back to the US shortly after the funeral still living in the US.
